Abstract
1327428 Alloy coatings GILLETTE CO 21 July 1970 [28 July 1969 (2) 13 Oct 1969 19 June 1970] 35249/70 Heading C7F A metal article such as a razor blade has on a surface thereof a film of an alloy of (a) Ir, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru or Re and (b) Cr, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, W or V, the alloy composition being that of an intermetallic compound with the A15 cubic structure or the tetragonal ordered (sigma phase) structure or being within 5wt. per cent of the proportions of the metals in such compound. The coating is deposited by DC or RF sputtering in Ar either from a disc-shaped target, e.g.of Cr with Pt foil welded thereto to cover such area that the desired alloy coating is obtained on sputtering, or from a rod of Cr with Pt bands around it, the sputtering being preceded by glow discharge cleaning of a pile of razor blades or coiled blade strip, and by pre-sputtering of the target, a mask being interposed between it and the substrate; sputtering may take place in a magnetic field. Alternatively the blades, e.g. of stainless steel containing Cr and/or Ni, may be coated by electron beam evaporation. Specific alloy coatings disclosed are Cr 3 Pt, Ti 3 Pt, Cr-Os, Cr-Ir, Cr-Ru, V-Ir, and Ta-Ir, and the last two stated coatings may be further covered with Cr 3 Pt; the coated blade may then be coated by sintering at 550- 800 F with a shave-facilitating fluorocarbon polymer.
