Abstract
1447224 Evaporation - condensation Al alloy DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Nov 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39398/72 Headings C7A C7D and C7F Aluminium alloy of composition:- Cr 2-12% Fe 0À2-3% Balance aluminium, impurities and incidental elements produced by evaporation and condensation wherein most of the chromium is present as a metastable solution in the aluminium lattice which contains a precipitate phase of iron rich zones the major proportions of which have dimensions of 200A‹ or less, the presence of large intermetallic particles particularly at grain boundaries being at a minimum. The alloy may be produced by electron beam evaporation of an iron, chromium, aluminium containing charge using the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which a change comprising Fe, Cr and Al is placed in mixing chamber 22, evaporating chamber 27 and optionally melting chamber 20 and an ingot comprising chromium and aluminium is melted in melting chamber 20, mixed in chamber 22 and evaporated in chamber 27 and deposited on the collector which is held at 260 to 370‹C. The deposited alloy may additionally contain a total of up to 0À5% of one or more of Ni, Co, Si, Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Oz, Mg, Cd, Zn, Mn, Ti, Mo, C and Be and may consist of narrow elongated grains of diameter 5 pu m which may be transformed to flat extended plate like grams of thickness 5 pu m or less by hot pressing or rolling (e.g. at 20‹C to 260‹C).
