[Also in Division C2] Stable, injectable antibiotic compositions for parenteral administration comprise (a) 0.1 to 15 parts by weight of oxytetracycline base or an acid addition salt thereof, (b) a watersoluble magnesium salt present in a molar ratio of 0.5 to 2 moles per mole of the antibiotic, (c) 50 to 95 parts by weight of a glycerol formal selected from 4-hydroxymethyl-1,3- dioxolane and/or 5-hydroxy-1,3-dioxane, (d) 0 to 45 parts by weight of water, (e) an antioxidant in an amount sufficient to stabilize the composition, and (f) a buffering agent in an amount sufficient to impart a pH of 6 to 9.5 to the composition. Component (a) may be oxytetracycline hydrochloride, phosphate, sulphate or acetate; component (b) may be magnesium chloride, acetate, sulphate, gluconate, glucoheptonate or phosphate; component (e) may be sodium bisulphite, metabisulphite or formaldehyde-sulphoxylate; and component (f) may be sodium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, ammonia, ethanolamine, diethylamine, ethylamine, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, arginine or glucosamine.
