Fluoropyridines are prepared by replacement of chlorine by fluorine by reaction with hydrogen fluoride vapour at elevated temperature using as catalyst an oxide or fluoride of aluminium or chromium. A specified catalyst is black chromium oxide mixed with graphite. Fixed or fluidized beds may be used. Specified products are 2 - fluoro - 3,4,5,6 - tetrachloropyridine, 2,6 - difluoro - 3,4,5 - trichloropyridine and 2,4,6 - trifluoro - 3,4 - dichloropyridine. [GB1234543A]
