Abstract

1275683 Abrasive tools; core drills KENNAMETAL Inc 9 March 1970 [29 April 1969] 11077/70 Headings B3C and B3D [Also in Divisions Cl and C4] An abrasive material consists of particles each of which is composed of essentially synthetic diamonds distributed in a body of matrix material in which the diamonds were formed in situ by precipitation, the particles being formed by crushing a larger member of the same composition and screening the particles formed to group them into size ranges. The member is obtained by forming a charge of non-diamond carbon and a metal which includes a carbon solvent and subjecting the charge to heat and pressure to convert the carbon to diamond. Suitable metals are alloys of iron, nickel and chromium and small amounts of metal such as manganese, tantalum, titanium, zirconium and copper may be present. A work member such as a grinding wheel or core drill comprises a holder having a work surface and, bonded to the surface, particles of diamond distributed in a body of matrix material in which the diamonds are formed in situ.
