Abstract

1288583 Vericulated polymer granules and polymer composition based thereon BALM PAINTS Ltd 17 Nov 1969 [28 Nov 1968] 56081/69 Headings C3B C3C C3P and C3R [Also in Division D2] Vericulated polymer granules have a mean diameter of at least 1 Á, the maximum diameter of the vericles is less than 20 Á, the ratio of the granule diameter to mean vericle diameter is at least 5 : 1 and the volume of the vericles is 5- 95% of the total volume of the granules. The vericles may contain up to 60% by volume of particulate solid or a liquid. The granules may be dispersed in a proportion of 5-95% by volume of total solids in a mixture of a filmforming vehicle and 0-85% of a pigment. In Examples (1-15) the granules consisted of polystyrene, styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer, a styrene/hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer reacted with maleic anhydride, a polyester (fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol) cross-linked with styrene, an epichlorohydrin/polyamide resin, cellulose acetate butyrate; cyclohexylmethacrylate, methyl methacrylate or styrene/dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer quaternized with benzyl chloride, a chlorinated rubber and/or a vinylidine chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer: the vericulated granules were made by polymerizing monomers in aqueous media and/or organic liquids, or by dispersion of water into solutions of the polymer in organic solvents: the vericles contained aqueous liquid and rutile TiO 2 (in Examples 2, 4 and 6) and sodium pentachlorphenate (in Example 15); and the polymer of the granules was pigmented with TiO 2 (in Examples 5 and 6). In Examples (16-30) the granules were compounded with TiO 2 , propylene-glycol, a sodium aryl sulphonate, water, ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether, di-octadecyl sodium sulphosuccinate, sodium hexametaphosphate, hydroxyethyl cellulose, silica, a vinyl acetate/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate copolymer, a styrene/acrylic acid/ acrylate copolymer, petrol, ethyl acrylate/ methyl methacrylate copolymer, soya bean oil/ glycerol phthalate alkyd, xylene, styrene/butyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer, butanol, butylated melamine formaldehyde resin, toluene, acetone, methyl methacrylate/ methacrylic acid copolymer, styrene-butadiene copolymer, benzyl butyl phthalate, sand, saturated polyester, glycol monoethyl ether acetate, a hexamethylene diisocyanate adduct, ethylene glycol acetate, an epoxy resin, a polyamide, methyl isobutyl ketone, wood pulp and/or polyethylene.
