Abstract

1312083 Coating compositions BALM PAINTS Ltd 23 June 1970 [23 June 1969] 30457/70 Heading C4A [Also in Division C3] A coating composition consists essentially of (a) 5-45% by volume of the total composition solids, of rigid spheroidal pigmented polymer granules of particle diameter 1-100 microns and comprising 1-80% by volume of pigment, (b) a film-forming medium (as defined) which will provide 10-70% by volume of total composition solids, of a polymeric binder, and (c) pigment, other than in (a), comprising 0-80% of extender pigment, at a concentration such that the volume fraction of pigment in the combination of said pigment and polymeric binder is 10- 80%, provided that also the weight fraction of said pigment in said combination must be at least 42%. The film-forming composition is defined as consisting of a component or components which, on drying the composition, provide a binder in which the solids of the composition are embedded. Such binders include autoxidizable oils such as linseed, tung, safflower, soya or dehydrated castor oil. Component (a) is preferably an addition polymer, optionally cross-linked to improve its rigidity. Polymers of styrene and its substituted derivatives, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, methyl-, ethyl-, and n-butylacrylates and methacrylates, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, are mentioned, pigmented with pigments such as TiO 2 (many other pigments are listed). As component (c) TiO 2 optionally extended with for example talc barytes, or silica, is exemplified.
