1278327 Hair-setting composition DEUTSCHE TEXACO AG 21 May 1969 [29 May 1968] 25882/69 Heading A5B [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] A hair-setting solution contains 2-10 wt % of a resin obtained by reaction in aqueous solution at pH not less than 5, optionally in the presence of an organic solvent, of (A) a 5:5-dialkylhydantoin having 1-5 C atoms in each alkyl group with (B) formaldehyde and (C) a compound containing two functional groups of which one is -NH 2 or -CONH 2 and the other -NH 2 -CONH 2 , or -OH. Preferably, when (C) is a diamide, e.g. urea, it is present during the methylolation of the hydantoin, and when it is a diamine, e.g. ethylene diamine, it is added later; the preferred molar ratios are (A):(B):diamide=3:4.5-7.5: 0.6-7.5 and (A):(B):diamine=3:4.5-7.5:0.6- 3. A ketone may be added with the diamide, e.g. in amount 0.2 moles per mole of diamide. The setting solution may additionally contain a vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer or an oil-free phthalate resin. In Examples 1-5 dimethylhydantoin is condensed with urea and acetone and formalin, the products, except in Ex. 4, being heated with isopropanol, methanol or n-butanol i.p.o. HCl, then neutralised with Et 3 N to give products of MW 800-1200; in Examples 6 and 7 dimethylhydantoin is heated with formalin, then with ethylene diamine in isopropanol or benzene to give resins of MW 1500-3000; in Example 8 dimethylhydantoin is heated with formalin and salicylamide to give a resin of MW 1050. In Example 9 a 3.6 wt % solution in isopropanol/dichlormethane is prepared of the product of Ex. 6 alone or mixed with the product of Ex. 1 or with a vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer; the solution is mixed with a fluorocarbon to give an aerosol spray.
