Abstract

1,253,293. N-Aryl-pyrid-2-ones. ROHM & HAAS CO. 13 Jan., 1969 [16 Jan., 1968; 26 Nov., 1968], No. 1816/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] Novel N-aryl-pyrid-2-ones of the formula I wherein R 4 and R 6 are CH 3 or CH 3 CH 2 ; R 5 is H, CH 3 , CH 3 CH 2 or Cl; Y is Br, Cl, NH 2 or OR, wherein R is H, C 1-5 alkyl or a salt forming cation; and Aryl is wherein X is NH 2 , F, Cl, Br, I, C 1-5 alkyl, CF 3 , OCH 3 or NO 2 ; X<SP>1</SP> is F, Cl, Br, I, CH 3 , CF 3 or OCH 3 and n is 0, 1 or 2, with the proviso that X in the phenyl radical above may be H when n is 1 or 2 and there is a halogen atom in the 3- position of said benzene ring; are prepared by one of the following methods:-(a) hydrolysing the corresponding N-aryl-3-cyanopyrid-2-ones followed by separation of the compounds of the above formula I in which Y is OH and CONH 2 ; (b) reacting the corresponding C 1-5 alkyl esters of 2-pyrone-3-carboxylic acid with Aryl-NH 2 to give compounds of above formula I in which Y is OR; (c) reacting compounds of above formula I in which Y is OH with ROH or halogenating agents such as oxalyl chloride, thionyl chloride or bromide and phosphorus pentachloride. N - aryl - 3 - cyano - 4 - R 4 - 5 - R 5 - 6 - R 6 - pyrid-2-ones are obtained either by oxidizing the corresponding N-aryl-3-cyano-4-R 4 -5-R 5 -6-R 6 - pyridinium halides or by condensing beta-diketones of the formula with N-arylcyanoacetamides of the formula which are made by heating ethyl cyanoacetate with the appropriate anilines or naphthylamines. Herbicidal compositions contain at least one of the above novel compounds and adjuvants therefor. [GB1253293A]
