Abstract
1,215,892. Welding by fusion. ELEKTRODENFABRIK OERLIKEN BUHRLE AG. 27 March, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 14800/68. Heading B3R. In a method of arc welding in an inert atmosphere with a consumable electrode, the welding current comprises four consecutive peaks, providing drop transfer, a first peak 4 at the end of which the current falls to a level insufficient to maintain a steadily burning arc, a second peak 1 during which material is melted and detached from the electrode in one drop 7, a third peak 2 having substantially the same maximum value as the first peak and during which the arc is maintained with minimal electrode melting, and a fourth peak 3 during which the drop is accelerated towards the work and further material is melted at the end of the electrode, the ratio of the maximum values of the second to third peaks being varied between 2À5 : 1 and 10 : 1 and the ratio of the maximum values of the fourth to third peaks being varied between 1À2 : 1 and 7 : 1 in dependence upon electrode diameter and specific current loading. In apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown), for producing the requisite current characteristic, impedances (11, 12) are constructed of cores of grain-oriented laminations whereby the ratio of the maxima of the second to fourth peaks is automatically varied from 4 : 1 to 1 : 1 with increasing mean welding current strength.
