Abstract

ABSTRACT Improvements in and relating to roofing A roof tile edge pointing support (1) is provided. It comprises a channel shaped grout container (2) having a base (3) and upstanding front (5) and rear (4) walls. The rear wall (4) projects above the front wall to allow the insertion of grout. The rear wall (4) terminates in a batten engaging support (7) which fits beneath a tile (10). Grout is inserted in the direction of the arrow A. (Fig- 2)

Description

Improvements in and relating to rootingj Introduction The present invention relates to roofing and in particular to the use of tiles for roofing and the necessity to edge point the tiles at the gable end of the roof.

What happens at present is that the tiles are laid projecting beyond the wall of the gable end of the house. Then, a batten is nailed in position beneath the projecting tiles and the gap between the batten and the tile is pointed using a suitable grouting material. When the grouting has set, the batten is then removed. This is thus both a time consuming task and, even more importantly, requires the work to be done in two stages as the batten has to be placed in position and subsequently removed.

The present invention is directed towards overcoming at least some of these problems.

Statements of invention According to the invention, there is provided a roof tile edge pointing support comprising a channel shaped pointing grout container having a base and upstanding front and rear walls, the rear wall extending upwards beyond the front wall and temninating in a tile engaging support plate, projecting rearwardly from the pointing grout container and substantially orthogonal to the rear wall. Strictly speaking, an upstanding front wall is not required, however, it greatly facilitates the retention of grout.

Ideally, the front wall is inclined outwardly from the rear wall. The front wall may have a height between 25% and 45% of that of the rear wall. ideally, the rear wall has a depth sufficient to cover the edge face of a tiling lath or batten.

In use, the support is mounted on the edge of the gable wall, that is to say, usually on a tile support batten or lath and then remains there until it is necessary to point the gable end. Grout can easily be inserted into the channel and the channel can be left in situ.

This prevents the ingress of moisture, particularly by capillary action.

The channel may be manufactured from any suitable material such as galvanised steel, a coated steel strip or a plastics material.

Detailed Descrifi n of the Invention The invention will be more clearty understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a roof tile edge pointing support according to the invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the roof tile edge pointing support on a roof.

Refening to the drawings and initially to Fig. 1, there is provided a roof tile edge pointing support, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, comprising a channel shape pointing grout container 2 having a base 3 and an upstanding rear wall 4 and front wall 5, which front wall 5 is inclined to the base 3 and projects about one third of the way up the rear wall 4. The rear wall 4 tenninates at a bend 6 where it is connected to a batten engaging support plate 7 having an inner lip 8 forming a moisture barrier. The support plate 7 projects rearwardty from the pointing grout container 2 and is substantially orthogonal to the rear wall 4. The roof tile edge pointing support 1, in this embodiment, is manufactured from sheet steel.

Referring now to Fig. 2, there is illustrated a tile 10 mounted on a batten 11 which in turn is affixed to the top of a wall 12. The roof tile edge pointing support 1 is illustrated mounted between the tile 10 and the batten 11.

In use, after the roof tiles 10 have been placed in position over the batten engaging support 7, grouting is inserted, in the direction of the arrow A, into the container 2. The |Ell30692 roof tile 10 can lie inwardly of the roof tile edge pointing support 1; in this particular embodiment it is almost flush with the edge of the roof tile pointing support 1 which is the most aesthetically pleasing position.

It will be appreciated that the roof tile edge pointing support can be manufactured from any suitable material such as, for example, plastics material or, as in the embodiment above, sheet steel sold in a strip. There is no need to remove the roof tile pointing support afterthe pointing grout has set. This greatly reduces the work involved.

The actual shape of the roof tile pointing support is not particularly important. All that is required is something that will engage beneath the roof tile and will then in turn support sufficient grout. Ideally, it should be made in such a way that most of the grout is held within the container.

In the specification the temis "comprise, comprises, comprised and comprising" or any variation thereof and the terms "include, includes, included and including" or any variation thereof are considered to be totally interchangeable and they should all be afforded the widest possible interpretation and vice versa.

The invention is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore described, but may be varied in both construction and detail, within the scope of the appended claims.

Claims (5)

1. A roof tile edge pointing support comprising a channel shaped pointing grout container having a base and upstanding front and rear walls, the rear wall extending upwards beyond the front wall and terminating in a batten engaging support plate, the support plate projecting rearwardly from the pointing grout container and substantially orthogonal to the rear wall.

2. A roof tile edge pointing support as claimed in claim 1 in which the front wall inclines outwardly away from the rear wall.

3. A roof tile edge pointing support as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the front wall has a height of between 25% and 45% of that of the rear wall.

4. A roof tile edge pointing support as claimed in any preceding claim in which the batten engaging support plate terminates in a free edge having an upstanding lip forming a moisture barrier.

5. A roof tile edge pointing support substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
