Abstract

Liquid which contains solids in suspension is routed along the surface of a filter element, and preferably parallel with it, at a velocity which prevents settling of the solid material. The filtrate and solids-rich liquid are discharged separately. The liquid containing the suspended solid material is continuously recirculated, with the addition of fresh liquid and the continuous or intermittent removal of solids-rich liquid in order to maintain the mass balance demanded by the velocity of flow along the filter surface. The equipment is a vertical cylinder with inlet and discharge connections and containing a concentrically located filter pipe.
