Abstract

Liquids contg. organic materials, esp. wastes such as dilute manure and sewage sludge, to be treated are routed to concentric reactor spaces. The raw liquid is introduced from below, under pressure into the first reactor space. Acidic fermentation takes place and hydrogen gas is developed which is fed to the lower part of the second reactor space to produce floatation in the liquid. Liquid is intermittently withdrawn from the first reactor space by overflowing into discharge throats. It is routed into the second reactor space where methanogen decomposition occurs. The methane developed is piped away and the liquid overflows into the third reactor space, where it is sterilised at 50-55 deg.C and discharged from the reactor.
