Abstract

Penicillin derivs. of formula (I) are new where R is a gp. of formula (II), (III) or (IV); R3 = H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl or phenyl; R4, R5 and R6 each = H, lower alkyl, halogen or lower alkoxy; A = -O- or -N(lower alkyl)-; n = 0 or 1; R1 = H or OH; and R2 = H, alkali metal or carboxy protecting gp. - 32 cpds. (I) are specifically claimed e.g. Na salt of 6-(4-methyl-isocoumarin -3-carboxamido)-2,2 -dimethyl-penam-3 -carboxylic acid, Na salt of 6-(7,8-dimethoxy -isocoumarin-3-carboxamido) -2,2-dimethyl-penam -3-carboxylic acid, Na salt of 6-(N-(2-methyl-1(2H) -phthalazinone-4-carbonyl) -2R-2-aminophenylacetamido) -2,2-dimethyl-penam-3 carboxylic acid and corresp. methyl esters. - Prepn. of (I) is also claimed and comprises reacting cpd. (V) with RCOZ in solvent where X = H or trialkylsily; Y = metal or ammonium cation or trialkylsilyl; and Z = -O-CO-Alk or halogen. Solvent is e.g. acetone, THF, DMF, DMSO, CH2Cl2, etc.
