Abstract

The yield of essential oils from onions is increased by adding the naturally occurring essential onion oil intermediaries dipropyl-disulphide and/or dipropyl-trisulphide to onions in amts. of 0.001-0.2 wt.% and proceeding with the known method of oil prodn. and distillation. The oil yield increases by more than the amts. of added intermediaries, it can be improved still further by adding the intermediaries as water-in-oil emulsions with poly-sorbate type emulsifiers. - Mixing dipropyl-disulphide and/or dipropyl-trisulphide in the wt. proportion 1:10 to 10:1 with essential onion oil obtd. in the known way and heating the mixt. in air for 0.2-24.0 hrs. to 50-130 deg. C leads to a prod. with all characteristics of essential onion oil. - The added intermediaries undergo, with the cpds. present in the vegetable matter during the distillation process, a chemical transformation which gives an oil with the typical characteristic properties of essential onion oil. This interaction is in evidence also with the cpds. present in the distilled essential oil, even in the presence of diluents.
