Abstract
Method involves tightly wrapping the area around the crafting point, including some of the root stock and of tthe graft, in one or more layers of clear, transparent, stretch type, clinging plastics film, sealing both ends away from the grafting point. A number of grafted stocks are tied up in a bundle and stood in a water bath. The stocks are then covered with a transparent plastics sheet leaving at least 20 cm of air space above them. The space enclosed by the plastic sheet is kept at the optimum temp. of 30-32 deg.C and the development of buds and healing of the grafting point are carefully monitored. - The water bath is periodically re-newed. Following healing of the grafting point and enlargement of the buds the temp. is reduced to 25-28 deg.C., and the water bath is replaced with a nutrient soln., first of a lower, then following opening of the buds and healing of the grafting point, of a higher concn. The nutrient soln. is periodically replaced by a water bath, and is removed during periods of darkness. During the whole period relative humidity of 95% is maintained in the enclosure. Oxygen requirements of the plants are met by opening the enclosure for longer and longer periods and with increased frequency. A similar procedure is used to produce rooted cuttings. The top third of each cutting in wrapped in a plastics sheet and the top end of the plastic sheet is sealed. The cuttings are then grown in the usual manner. Equipment is also proposed to produce wrapping material noted above.
