Abstract
p-(2-Methoxy-ethyl)-phenol (I) is prepd. by nitrating 2-phenyl-ethyl-acetate with nitrating acid, boiling the resulting nitro-beta-phenyl-acetate isomer mixt. with hydrobromic acid, selectively crystallising and sepg. 4-nitro-beta-phenyl -ethyl-bromide from the resulting nitro-phenyl-ethyl-bromide isomer mixt. in a lower alcohol, heating the sepd. cpd. in methanolic soln. in the presence of 1.1-2.0 mole alkali-metal-methylate or alkali-metal-hydroxide, reducing the 4-nitro-(methyl-beta-phenyl-ether) so obtd., diazotating the resulting 4-amino-(methyl-beta-phenyl -ethyl-ether) and boiling down the reaction mixt.
