Abstract
A high moisture nutrient formulation for enhancing the health, viability, cumulative wt. gain or feed efficiency of poultry comprises, (wt.%): (a) at least 50 (pref. 50-80)% water; (b) at least 10% carbohydrate; and (c) (i) at least 5% protein, (ii) at least 7% aminoacids and/or precursors and/or analogues, (iii) at least 5% protein and at least 5% aminoacids and/or precursors and/or analogues, (iv) at least 10% of a combination of protein, aminoacids and precursors and analogues, or (v) at least 10% protein, the ratio of (b) to (c) being 1:1 to 3:1; or for newly hatched poultry, (a), (b) and an additive selected from bile salts, surfactants, enzymes, enzyme co-factors, hormones, prostaglandins, peptides, immunoglobulins, immuno modulators, antioxidants and antibiotics. Also claimed are: (1) enhancement of the health, viability, cumulative wt. gain or feed conversion efficiency of poultry by (i) feeding them a high moisture material (contg. at least 20% water) before they are offered dry food; and (ii) feeding them an extrudate of high moisture material (the solid exudate contg. at least 50% water and at least 10% carbohydrate); (2) the exudate per se and its use for other animals; (3) a high moisture material for inoculating an animal with a microorganism, which comprises 50-80% water and at least 102 colony forming units of bacterium per g; and (4) the inoculation of poultry with yeast or bacteria by feeding them the material.
