Abstract

ÓThe subject of the invention is the isolated active fragments of protein and polypeptide triggers of the hypersensitivity response, which fragments do not trigger the hypersensitivity response in plants. Isolated DNA molecules encoding such fragments are also disclosed in the invention. The isolated fragments of the hypersensitivity response-inducing polypeptide or protein according to the invention and the DNA molecules encoding them have the following activities: they provide resistance to effective diseases in plants, enhance plant growth and/or ensure resistance of plants to insects. This can be achieved by applying non-infectious forms of polypeptide or protein fragments that induce a hypersensitive response to plants or plant seeds under conditions that are effective in providing plant disease resistance, enhancing plant growth and/or protecting plants against insects. Alternatively, transgenic plants or plant seeds transformed with DNA encoding the fragments can be provided, and the transgenic plants or transgenic plants derived from the seeds of the transgenic plants can be grown under conditions effective in providing plant disease resistance, plant growth enhancement, and/or plant insect protection.
