Abstract

The invention relates to a process for coating metallic articles in which an aqueous, acidic coating mixture containing phosphate ions and ions from the group comprising chromate or molybdate ions is applied to the articles, dried and hardened. It is provided according to the invention that the dried coating and/or a surface layer or near- surface layer of the metallic base material of the articles is (are) hardened in a gas nitration or gas carbonitration process.
