Abstract
Διαστημόπλοια και ρομποτικά σκάφη που διεισδύουν πλανητικές ατμόσφαιρες με μεγάλη ταχύτητα, προστατεύονται από θερμικές και μηχανικές καταπονήσεις μετη χρήση διαφόρων υλικών, συνήθως προηγμένα κεραμικά και σύνθετα κεραμικά υλικά. Εδώ παρουσιάζεται ένα νέο σύνθετο υβριδικό θερμομηχανικό προστατευτικό σύστημα που αποτελείται από στρώματα πυρίμαχων κεραμικών και εμπεριέχει ένα υλικό που απορροφά τηθερμότητα μετασχηματιζόμενο αλλάζοντας φάση. Η χρήση του επιτρέπει πολλαπλές ατμοσφαιρικές διεισδύσεις με υψηλότερες ταχύτητες από ότι είναι δυνατό με τα συνήθη συστήματα, χωρίς θραύση ή σημαντική μείωση της θερμομηχανικής προστατευτικής του λειτουργικότητας. Η κυριότερη καινοτομία του είναι σημαντική συνεργία που υπάρχει μεταξύ του εσωτερικού μετασχηματιζόμενου υλικού, που απορροφά τη θερμότητααπό τα κεραμικά μέρη, και των κεραμικών στρωμάτων του συστήματος που προστατεύουν το μετασχηματιζόμενο υλικό, ελέγχουν την ταχύτητα μετασχηματισμού τουκαι το προστατεύουν από θραύση, που συμβαίνει συνήθως σε πολυμερικά συστήματα καύσης που χρησιμοποιούνται σήμερα σε εξερευνητικά σκάφη. Με τη χρήση ενός υλικού που δεν καίγεται μπορεί να επαναχρησιμοποιηθεί αμέσως χωρίς μείωση της αποτελεσματικότητας του όπως π.χ. σε αποστολές δειγματοληψίας από άλλους πλανήτες.
