Abstract

Extract of sage flowers, Salvia officinalis, with hexane and water or the active volatile cpmponent 1.8-cineol in Dipropylene glycol at 4-5% concentration impregnated in cotton pad into a plastic conical vial (about 2ml) with a hole 1mm on the tap, replaced at bimonthly intervals in combination with blue sticky trap 25 cm x 40 cm is suitable for the effective control of Californian thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, in a rate 20 traps/stremma and one vial/trap in a rhombus arrangement on greenhouse sweet peppers and egg plants, they control effectively Californian thrips all the crop season (Sept-May) while they permit parallel use of useful Hetroptera predators Orius laevigatus, which are commonly used for its biological control. Advantage of the method is the significant increase of attractiveness of blue sticky traps adding a strong attractive volatile substance in suitable slow release polymer and the autonomous use of method as an effective tools for the control of Californian thrips without impede the parallel use of beneficial arthropods and other chemical or biotechnological means in the frame of organic or IPM crop poduction on greenhouse sweet peppers and egg plants.
