Abstract
The invention refers to the induction of periodic flow of liquid in a two phase (liquid-gas) concurrent downwards, in a trickle bed column, with frequencies approaching those of the natural pulsing flow. In this manner the advantages of the pulsing flow are exploited in liquid flowrates lower than those corresponding to the usual process under steady conditions. The periodic (ON-OFF) liquid flow is effected with opening and shutting down of the feed rate, with a frequency in the region of 0.05 - 10 Hz. Apart from the periodic feed rate another steady liquid supply may exist, depending on the application. It has been experimentally observed that the periodic flow of liquid with frequencies hydrodynamically simulating the pulsing flow, increases the liquid-solid mass transfer rates resulting in an increase of the efficiency of the column.
