Abstract

999,937. Ornamenting. BORDON CO. Feb. 18, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 6740/64. Heading B6G. A decorative printing process comprises applying a plastisol over discontinuous areas of a sheet having a facing of thermoplastic resinous material that is softenable to adherent conditions by contact with the plastisol at 95‹ to 200‹ C. The plastisol comprises a suspension of 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin in 25 to 150 parts by weight of a substantially non-volatile liquid that in the cold is a suspending medium for the thermoplastic resin and after warming is a solvent plasticizer for it, and 0.5 to 40 parts by weight of a blowing agent. When the assembly is warmed to a temperature of at least 95‹ C. to develop tackiness at the zone of contact between the facing and the areas of applied plastixol, the resin expands to vesicular form. The plastisol may be applied through a plate stencil, cylindrical stencil or a photo-engraved print shell. The facing of thermoplastic resinous material may be the same as the thermoplastic resin in the plastisol. Suitable thermoplastic resins are (1) polyvinyl chloride, (2) esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alcohols containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, (3) copolymers of 100 parts by weight of vinyl chloride with 5 to 50 parts by weight of vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, vinylidene chloride, ethyl or methyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile or styrene, (4) mixtures of 100 parts of polyvinyl chloride with 5 to 50 parts by weight of homopolymers of vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, vinylidene chloride, ethyl or methyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile or styrene, and (5) the copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Suitable plasticizers are dibutyl, dioctyl or didodecyl phthalate or sebecate, tricresyl phosphate or epoxidized soybean or linseed oil. Suitable blowing agents are N, N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl - N, N<SP>1</SP> - dinitroso - terephthalamide, azodicarbonamide, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - hydroxybis - (benzenesulphonyl hydroxide), diazoaminobenzene or dinitro pentamethylene tetramide. The plastisols may also contain fillers and pigments and a stabilizer for the thermoplastic resin. In a modification, 5 to 100 parts by weight of a volatile organic thinner may be added to 100 parts by weight of the plasticizer.
