Abstract
999,823. Boring earth, &c. E. H. BERGSTROM. Aug. 8, 1963 [May 9, 1962], No. 17774/62. Addition to 999,822. Heading E1F. The invention of the parent Specification, which concerns laying a pipe line by forcing a series of pipe lengths through the ground, is modified in that a sleeve having a cutting edge is fitted on the leading end and any tendency for the cutting sleeve 11 to deviate in direction is rectified by fitting it with oppositely directed outwardly extending blades 18 which lie at an angle such that in cutting through the ground they re-align the sleeve, whereon the blades are removed. Pairs of slits 16, 17 are situated in the sleeve 11 and in a short sleeve 13 welded inside it. The slits are aligned to allow a blade to be inserted through a pair and inclined to cause the end of the pipe to change in direction after the blades have been inserted. The blades are pushed outwards, e.g. by an hydraulic jack, through those pairs of slits, either 16 or 17, that will result in the required connection. Each blade may have a stop which prevents its inner edge from being pushed through the inner sleeve. The slits may be covered by shutters when the blades are not being used.
