Abstract

1 - Hydroxy - N - (2 - N - methylpyridinium) - 2 - naphthamide p - toluene sulphonate is prepared by heating phenyl 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate with 2-aminopyridine in ethanol and quaternizing the 1-hydroxy-N-(2-pyridy)-2-naphthamide thus formed by heating it with methyl p-toluene sulphonate in dry dioxane. 1 - Hydroxy - N - [2 - methoxy - 5 - (3,5 - dicarboxyphenylcarbamyl)phenyl]-2-naphthamide is prepared by converting 3-nitro-anisic acid to its acid chloride with thionyl chloride, reacting this with dimethyl-5-amino-iso-phthalate followed by reduction of the nitro group to give 2-amino-4 - [(3,5 - dicarbomethoxyphenyl)carbamyl]anisole which is then heated with phenyl 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate. The ester formed is converted to the free dicarboxylic acid by boiling with aqueous sodium hydroxide and acidifying with HCl. 1 - (3,5 - Dicarboxyphenyl) - 3 - amino - 5 - pyrazolone is prepared by converting dimethyl 5-amino-isophthalate to the free acid, diazotizing and reducing the diazonium salt with sodium sulphite and hydrochloric acid to give 5-hydrazino-isophthalic acid, dissolving this in sodium hydroxide and reacting it with ethyl b -ethoxy-b -iminopropionate in ethanol.
