Abstract

Textile materials may be dyed by being charged with static electricity, bringing the charged material into contact with a dye in powder form so that the dye adheres to the substrate, and fixing the dye in the normal way by heat. The process is particularly applicable to hydrophobic semi-synthetic or synthetic macromolecular textile materials, e.g. of cellulose-2 1\2 -or triacetate, acrylonitrile polymers, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins or their blends with cotton. The charging may be brought about by friction e.g., by rotating rollers. The surface of the textile material may be first brought to a pre-determined potential. The dye powder may be applied by passing the charged textile into a chamber in which the powder is maintained in whirling motion, as by an air jet. The dye may be fixed at 180 DEG C. to 210 DEG C. by infra-red radiation or at 100 DEG C. to 120 DEG C. by exposure to water vapour.
