Abstract
999,471. Coating apparatus. WELLAND SHOE PRODUCTS Ltd., and F. J. NEAL. Sept. 25, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 18222/60. Heading B2B. Apparatus for treatment of shoe stiffeners comprises an endless conveyer carrying at spaced intervals releasable mounting means adapted to hold and grip a stiffener by a flange, the conveyer being so mounted as to dip the major part of such stiffener in a bath of liquid at any part of its travel and to pass through a drying chamber or chambers at another part of its travel, and each of said mounting means having a stiffener holding device which is automatically released at a subsequent discharge station by the conveyer being caused to pass round an arc of short radius. As shown (Fig. 1) the apparatus comprises a framework 10, 11-12 provided at one end at the bottom with a tank or trough 13 extending over the full width of the frame. The framework supports a plurality of endless chains 14 disposed parallel to each other. Above the tank 13 is a sprocket of large radius 15, a similar sprocket of large diameter 16 being disposed near the top of the left-hand end of the frame. Sprockets 17, 18 of small diameter are disposed, 17 at the upper right hand end of the frame and 18 on an adjustable outrigger 30 to control the tension of the chains. The chains are driven by a motor (not shown) driving sprocket 17. Longitudinal members 34 near the top co-operate with side walls 35 to form drying chambers through which the chains pass. The chains are of the type in which alternate links 38, Fig. 5, are narrower than their neighbours 39 and are pivoted between the latter. The wider links 39 carry laterally extending flanges supporting T- brackets 41 provided with central upstanding arms 43 which terminate in gripper jaws 44 parallel to the chain and extending over the adjacent link 38. Link 38 is formed with central lobes 45 supporting pivotally on a transverse pin 46 a hollow block 47 carrying a movable gripper jaw 48. This latter is urged by a spring 51 and a plate 50 both inside the block, against the jaw 44 supported by link 39. As long as the chain moves in a substantially straight path or round a sprocket of large diameter the jaws co-operate, but when it moves round a sprocket of small diameter as in Fig. 7 the pivoting movement causes the jaws to separate. The shoe stiffeners are loaded at A where the jaws are apart, carried down 14a to the tank 13 containing adhesive and taken through the liquid to sprocket 16. They then pass through drying chambers, in the left hand end of which warm air circulates. Hot air is injected at 36, and cooling air at 37. As the holding means pass round sprocket 17, the jaws separate and the stiffener C falls off down an inclined shoot 52.
