Abstract

999,314. Control of two A.C. motors. CANADIAN CONTROLLERS Ltd. June 27, 1962, No. 24711/62. Heading H2J. Relates to a control system for a hoist in which two A.C. motors are coupled to a load, and each motor has variable resistance in its rotor circuit. In the first hoisting-position of a drum controller, main motor 1 is connected to supply main 3, 4, 5, and a friction brake B is released after the motor is energized. The stator of auxiliary motor 6 is supplied with direct-current to exert a braking torque against the driving action of the main motor. The main motor has high secondary resistance, while that of the auxiliary is low in value. In the second hoisting-position the driving torque is increased and the braking torque reduced by rotor control. The auxiliary motor is connected to assist in hoisting the load in the third hoisting-position of the drum controller. Thereafter the load is lifted at high speeds, the rotor resistances being reduced in steps under the control of timing contactors. If an overhoist limit switch is operated, when the controller is in the first or second hoisting-position, the braking torque exerted by the auxiliary motor will assist the friction brake in stopping the load. The limit switch contacts may be connected either in a contactor circuit or directly in the motor circuit. In the first lowering-position of the controller, the secondary circuit of the main motor is connected to energize the stator with direct-current in addition to the current derived from rectifier 95. The auxiliary motor is idle at this time. Thereafter, the rotor resistance of the main motor is increased and the auxiliary motor is connected to drive the load downward. Further acceleration is provided by reducing the rotor resistance of the auxiliary motor, and then connecting the main motor to assist the downward drive. The stator of the auxiliary motor may be supplied with direct-current for braking in the "off" position of the drum controller.
