Abstract

999,260. Selective printing. RANK-XEROX Ltd. July 26, 1961, No. 27136/61. Heading B6F. An electrostatic printer in which printing is effected by the application of at least two pulses comprises, a rotatable cylinder 10, a number of character - bearing conductive rings 30 insulated from one another at 31, print electrodes 11 defining print gaps across which an electrical discharge is effected to apply an electrostatic charge to a record material fed through the gap, and coupling electrodes 33 closely spaced from the rings for coupling the outputs of electrical pulse generators to the rings 30. This arrangement overcomes the contradictory requirements of capacitors C1, 25, Fig. 2, in previous machines not using a coupling electrode 33. In the arrangement of the present invention, Fig. 4, a steady D.C. bias is applied from 34, a long pulse is applied to the electrode 33 from the pulse generators 17 and a short pulse is applied from input source 24 which is sufficient to increase the two previous potentials from 34 and 17 to effect static discharge to form an image on the web. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), small coupling electrodes 3C coact with smooth conductive shoulder areas 35 alongside the character rings 30. Specification 889,663 is referred to.
