Tensioning means for a circular screen 13 clamped between a pair of circular shells 7, 8 of a separator comprises a partition 12, a mounting plate 20 for a compression spring 24, a tension bolt 22 having a head 23 underlying the spring and a shaft 22 extending upwardly through the mounting plate, screen and an umbrella disc 26, and screwthreaded means 27 at the upper end of the shaft for drawing up the bolt and tensioning the screen, the umbrella disc serving to shield the mounting plate, spring and lower portion of the bolt from falling particles. As shown in Fig. 1, an upper screen 14 is also provided and is clamped between circular shells 8, 9 by a clamping ring 10, further rings 10 being provided to clamp the other shells together in a tier formation. The tiers are supported on springs 3 and vibrated by eccentric weights 6 driven by a motor 5. Material to be screened is poured on to the upper screen 14, the oversize particles being caused to pass radially out through a discharge spout 11. The material passing the upper screen falls on to an upper partition 15 for deflection through a central opening on to the screen 13 below. The material is radially progressed over the screen 13, the oversize particles passing out through a second discharge spout 11 and the screened material falling on to the partition 12 which is of domed form for directing the material towards a third discharge spout 11. The mounting plate 20 is supported by a bracket 19 or it may be constituted by a pair of cross straps 28 supported as shown on the partition 15. The lower portions 22a of the tension bolts are formed of square section in order to permit adjustment and rubber washers 25 are provided under the umbrella discs 26.
