Abstract

998,842. Dispensing liquids under pressure. VALVE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 13, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 32858/61. Heading FIR. The container of an aerosol device has a recess accommodating the operating button 64 in its top end, and the discharge orifice 70 in the button is in alignment with a discharge recess 66 in a side wall of the top end recess. The operating button 64 is a push fit on a valve stem 44 which extends into a valve housing 34. The housing 34 and a resilient valve disc are a press fit in cylindrical section 30 of the top end of the container. A lateral bore 50 in the valve stem 44 is held above the top of the section 30 by a spring 40 and when the button 64 is depressed to bring the bore 50 in communication with a chamber 52, the aerosol substance passes through bores 50, 48 to the orifice 70. The valve stem 44 which is of a resilient plastic material has an axially extending diametral slit 90 which allows the aerosol liquid to pass into the chamber 52 when the valve is normally closed and when the stem 44 is depressed, the unslit portion thereof blocks the aperture 88. An absorbent wick 94 at the end of the dip tube 56 ensures that none of the aerosol substance is wasted. A disc 60 is a close fit in the bottom of the container and is fixed by spinning, after the container has been filled, so that the conical mating surfaces 78 fuse together. In alternative embodiments, the valve button 64 may be mounted concentrically with the container, the discharge nozzle 70 being formed in an extension of the button and engaging in the discharge recess 66, or the button may be substantially the same diameter as the container.
