A gumming and feed device for strip material in which the strip moves across a surface for supplying gum and a guide or other device is provided for lifting the strip away from the surface, further comprises a damping device operable on the guide in the lifted position and clear of the transfer surface. In the arrangement shown strip 1 is supplied by a pair of driven feed rollers and travels in direction of arrow 39 over guide rollers 2, 3 and guide pin 24 to suction roller 4 on which it is severed into separate sheets 5 by a rotary cutter (not shown). Gum is supplied by gumming roller 8 and transfer roll 9 from container 7, the peripheral speed of roll 9 being greater than that of strip 1. In the position shown the strip is held out of contact with roll 9 by guide pin 24 through the medium of lever 26 and control magnet 38. Release of the magnet 38 allows the strip to drop into contact with roll 9. This movement is damped through arm 28 (part of lever 26) connected through rotatable clamp bush 29 to damping device 30, 31. The gum container 7 is supported by stud 11 and rest 14 locked in the support position by a handle 20. Release of the handle 20 enables the container 7 to be removed for cleaning purposes.
