Abstract

998,314. Lift trucks. HYSTER CO. Feb. 22, 1962, No. 6924/62. Heading B8H. In an hydraulic system comprising two or more rams which are supplied with fluid from a common source, such as an hydraulic system for a fork lift truck provided with a pair of masttilting rams or for a straddle carrier provided with four rams for raising a pair of load supports, check valves are provided prohibiting fluid flow between the cylinders after the positions of their pistons has been set but permitting either set of ends of the cylinders to be supplied with fluid under pressure and the cylinders to be connected together for the supply of fluid from a common source. As shown in Fig. 2, when the spool of a directional control valve 43 is moved to the right to tilt the mast 13 of a lift truck forwardly, fluid passes from the pump 45, through the line 53 to the righthand side of the cylinders 15, 17 of the tilt rams and through lines 53, 68 to the spool of a valve 61 which is thereby moved to the left against the action of a spring 67 thereby connecting lines 63, 65 from the left-hand side of cylinders 15, 17 to the line 55 from the reservoir 49. If the mast tends to tilt forwardly under its own load, the pressure at the right-hand side of cylinders 15, 17 will drop and the spool of valve 61 will be moved back by the spring 67 to the position shown, thereby breaking the connection between the lines 63, 65 from the cylinders. The mast is tilted back by moving the spool of valve 43 to the right so that fluid from the pump passes through the line 55 and ball valves 83, 79 to the left-hand side of cylinders 15, 17. If, when the spool of valve 43 is centred, the mast 13 tends to twist as the truck goes round a corner, the ball valves 83, 79 prevent flow of fluid between the cylinders and therefore prevent the mast from twisting. A similar circuit, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), is applied to four rams supporting a pair of load supports of a straddle carrier, wherein the load supports are maintained at the same level in the event of uneven loading.
