Abstract
998,261. Inertia switches. INERTIA SWITCH Ltd. Dec. 24, 1962 [Jan. 9, 1962], No. 854/62. Heading H2B. In an inertia switch, which is actuated by the axial deceleration of a device, e.g. an artillery shell, which is also subjected to a centrifugal force, a slug 12 in a cavity 11 of a body 2 is retained against one wall of the cavity by a magnet 9 until the decelerating force is applied to the switch, whereupon the slug 12 moves towards the other wall of the cavity and closes an electric circuit by completing the circuit between a conducting layer 6 and a conducting annulus 3. Due to the centrifugal force the slug is held against the side wall of the cavity, i.e. the annulus 3, about which it hinges when deceleration occurs to close the switch. The force exerted by the magnet 9 may be varied by altering the thickness of a spacer 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the slug is retained against one wall of the cavity by a spring.
