Abstract
1,149,422. Inertia switches. C. B. ASSOCIATES Ltd. 27 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 43665/66. Heading H1N. A switch in a projectile having a high speed of rotation, which operates when the projectile changes its velocity or direction (for example, upon impact) comprises a double frusto-conical member 1 around which an annular member 9, with a knife-edged inner face, is free to rotate. A casing formed by a plate 2 integral with member 1 soldered at 3 to a side wall 4 is closed by a contact plate 7 spaced therefrom by insulating members 5 and 6 and secured by encapsulating resin 8. The parts 1, 2 and 9 are gold plated to provide good electrical contact. When the projectile changes direction the spinning annulus 9 gyroscopically tends to maintain its original axis and hence bridges the members 1 and 7. If the projectile decelerates a couple is applied to the annulus 9 through its contact with member 1 and precession occurs which causes bridging of members 1 and 7.
