[Also in Division F3] A heat resistant structure comprises a substrate having an outwardly directed polished light reflecting surface and a layer of optically transparent material, which is at least one inch thick on said surface. The optically transparent material may be glass, quartz or a plastics material such as polyethylene reinforced with glass fibres. The substrate is preferably polished metal, e.g. stainless steel, and may form part of the article which is being protected or may be in the form of a metal skin which is attached to the article which may be formed of wood, concrete or steel. The structure may be used for the forward end of a projectile or for protecting articles against explosive blasts or rocket firings.
