Abstract
997,577. Cathode-ray storage tubes. MULLARD Ltd. June 25, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1962], No. 38380/62. Heading H1D. A direct-viewing charge-storage tube comprises a storage grid constituted by a metal plate having apertures which are lined with cathode-conductive dielectric storage material in such manner that the conductive matrix is at least partly exposed on both sides of the grid while the dielectric is subdivided into separate apertured elements exposed at least on the gun side of the grid. As shown, the dielectric elements 28, Fig. 6, are exposed on both sides, arsenic trisulphide being applied by evaporation to an apertured nickel plate 27, and removed from opposite faces of plate 27 by abrasion. Specific dimensions of the storage grid 20 and of ion repeller grid 23, Fig. 1, are given. The two grids 20, 23 are assembled together and supported from envelope inserts 26 of metal. The tube may be operated in a bi-stable mode with the storage elements 28 initially stabilized at ground potential by slow electrons from flood gun 13-15, and with the conductive matrics 27 at +100V, writing being effected with a high-energy beam from gun 5-9. Reading with slow flood electrons causes storage elements positively charged above the first cross-over potential to be stabilized at the potential of plate 27, the remaining elements being stabilized at ground potential. Erasure is effected by momentarily lowering the potential of plate 27. Alternatively, for half-tone display, the storage elements are initially made negative relative to flood gun cathode 13. In an alternative arrangement, a single gun is used for both writing and reading, Fig. 4 (not shown), reading being effected by scanning with a defocused beam. Specific operating potentials are given. Specification 954,098 is referred to.
