Abstract
997,559. Comminuting refuse and sewage. T. C. R. SHEPHERD. April 10, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No. 14419/63. Heading B2A. Apparatus suitable for disposal of solid waste material including sewage and refuse from blocks of flats comprises a chamber 5 to receive the waste and a supply of water, an apparatus 16, 17 to break up solid waste and agitate the water in the chamber, and an apparatus 24 to receive water and dispersed waste from the chamber and comminute the waste which is discharged into a drain. As described, the chamber 5 includes a waste supply pipe 12 and a door 9 for removal of non-suspensible waste, and is supplied with water via a float-controlled pump or headertank (not shown). Each apparatus 16, 17 includes a motor-driven rotor 21 having ripping claws 23, and the inner surface of the bottom of the chamber may include hooks, so that waste can be torn apart between the hooks and claws, before it is drawn through the comminutor 24 by a pump 25. The apparatus may be operated continuously or intermittently at predetermined time intervals. In a second embodiment, the chamber 5 includes an upper cylindrical part 50, Fig. 3, and a further conical lower part 52 having a ledge 53 supporting a perforated plate 54 to restrain floating material beneath it. A waste pipe 55 extends into the chamber below the plate and an overflow pipe 57 extends from the upper part of the chamber into a drain down-pipe 58. A comminuting apparatus 60, comprising a motor-driven rotary impeller and a ring of teeth, discharges waste which has been previously broken up by a rotary apparatus 65, via a pipe 62, which includes a solenoidoperated diaphragm valve 63, operated intermittently to prevent excess waste-flow into the comminutor. A siphon pipe 66 may provide intermittent flow in place of the valve 63.
