Abstract
<PICT:0997525/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0997525/C6-C7/2> A drill, e.g. a percussive rock drill, comprises a hardened rod thermally joined to a cutting element, the application of heat to effect thermal joining being so controlled as to thermally position an annealed and so weakened zone at that portion of the rod that has maximum cross-sectional area. The drill may be solid or hollow with passages 22, 26 for air or water. A steel rod 12 is provided with an enlarged end 14 by forging and is provided with one or more slots to receive tungsten carbide tips 30. After the rod 12 has been hardened by heat treatment, the bore 22 is closed by a plug 24 and the tip 30 and plates 40 of silver solder are inserted in the slot. The steel rod 12, which after hardening has a hardness of 60 Rockwell C, if heated to 1300 DEG F. and air cooled is annealed to a hardness of 20 Rockwell C, and if heated to 1500 DEG F. and air cooled is rehardened to 40 Rockwell C. The application of heat to the end 14 by a flame torch or by induction during brazing is so controlled that the end is heated to the rehardening temperature for a sufficient distance that the zone 44a which is heated only to the annealing temperature is located at the upper part of the enlarged end 14 which part has the greatest cross-sectional area. The melting point of the solder is 1350 DEG F.
