Abstract
A liquid composition curable to an elastic solid at room temperature comprises (A) 100 parts by weight of a polymer, wherein 0.001 to 2 mole per cent of terminal units selected from (R12N)R2SiO0.5, (R12N)R2Si(NR1)0.5 and R3SiNR1 are combined with 98 to 99.999% mole units selected from R2SiO, RSiO1.5, SiO2 and mixtures thereof, such that the ratio of R+R12N radicals per Si atom is 1.5 to 2.04 and the polymer has a viscosity of 102 to 109 cp. at 25 DEG C.; and (B) 0.5 to 10 parts of a boron oxide, a boron-oxygen acid or ester thereof, a phosphorus acid, sulphuric acid or ferric chloride. In the polymer each R is a monovalent saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical which may be halogenated, each R1 is H or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, the free valencies of the silicon atoms not connected to O or to N in terminal silazy, silylaminesiloxy or silylaminesilazy units are joined to R radicals, and the free valencies of N atoms not connected to Si and joined to R1 radicals. Various boron oxides, acids and esters and phosphorus acids are specified. The polymers may be obtained by reacting a halogen chain-stopped polysiloxane with ammonia or an amine. Optional ingredients specified are lamp black and titanium dioxide. Examples illustrate the preparation of the silicon polymers, their cure with boric, ophosphoric or sulphuric acid or ferric chloride and their application as elastic insulating coatings on resistors and copper wire. Other applications mentioned are sealing joints in roads, gasket materials, shock absorbers and adhesives.
