997, 319. Detecting displacement photoelectrically. VYZKUMNY USTAV OBRABECICH STROJU A OBRABENI. May 14, 1963[June 5, 1962], No. 19144/63. Headings G1A and G1M. A scale for indicating the movement of a machine comprises two rows of equal sized transparent and opaque areas, the transparent areas of one row being opposite the opaque areas of the other and vice versa. A lamp 1 illuminates the scale 2, behind which are two screens 4, 6 carrying respectively slots 3, which are spaced by a distance equal to twice the length of an area, and 5 which coincide with the rows of areas. Light passing through the slots 5 energizes separate detectors differentially connected to give a trapezoidal output with movement of the scale 2, the output passing through zero each time the slots 3 coincide with boundaries of adjacent areas. The scale may be built up of sections joined only in dark areas or at places sufficiently distant from the boundaries of the areas not to interfere with the indication.
