997,272. Electrophotographic materials. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. May 22, 1963 [June 19, 1962], No. 20477/63. Heading H1K. Sensitization of an electrophotographic material is achieved by the uniform deposition on the photo-conductive layer of an aerosol of a sensitizing dye. The arosol may be formed from a solution of the dye or from solid dye particles. (The latter are subsequently dissolved on the surface of the photo-conductive layer by the application of a suitable solvent). The aerosol may be produced using a compressed air nozzle or an electrostatic atomizer. The degree of sensitization may be controlled by more or less concentrated deposition of the aerosol or by mixing different aerosols. In the example, the aerosol is produced from an n-butylbenzoate solution of bromocresol purple using a compressed air driven annular slit nozzle. The aerosol is charged by a corona discharge and deposited in the electric field of a plate condenser on to the electrophotographic material which is drawn at a constant speed through the condenser. The material consists of a paper supported layer of zinc oxide dispersed in a silicone resin. The treated material after being stored in the dark for 5 hours has a substantially uncharged dark resistance, is only very faintly coloured, and is sensitive to yellow and green light.
