Abstract

997,122. Free piston engines or gas generators; regulating; fuel injection pumps; engine stop gear. SOC. D'ETUDES ET DE PARTICIPATIONS EAU GAS ELECTRICITE, ENERGIE S.A. March 5, 1963 [March 6, 1962], No. 8756/63. .Headings F1A, F1B, F1K and F1Q. An internal combustion engine particularly a free piston engine or gas generator has an hydraulic pump 6 controlling the admission of gaseous fuel to a combustion chamber of the engine and a second pump 8 for injecting liquid fuel directly and cyclically into the combustion chamber, the pistons of the two pumps being mounted in the same pump body and the piston of the first pump being arranged to engage and displace the piston of the second pump. The liquid fuel may be employed as a pilot fuel. There may be a plurality of injectors 7 in the combustion chamber for injection of liquid fuel, each injector being provided with a separate fuel accumulator 22 the second pump 8 supplying liquid fuel to all the accumulators in parallel. As shown there are provided in the wall of the piston 18 three recesses 31 so arranged that when the piston 18 nears the end of its delivery.stroke each recess 31 puts the corresponding conduits 30 and 23 into communication with one another. The three accumulators thus discharge simultaneously and independently through the corresponding injectors 7. Regulation of the commencement of injection may be produced either by means of a manual control or preferably automatically for example as a function of the boost pressure of the engine. A drop in oil pressure may be employed to stop the injection of liquid fuel A valve 38 may be kept closed by a pressure rs prevailing in a chamber 40. As shown the first pump 6 supplies fuel to the second pump 8 and the fuel supplied by the first pump controls the valve 4 controlling the supply of the gaseous fuel.
