Abstract
The invention consists of epoxy ethers of the general formula RO.(CH2O)xR wherein R is an epoxyalkyl, epoxycycloalkyl, epoxyaralkyl, epoxyalkenyl or an epoxy containing polycyclic aliphatic grouping and x is a small integer greater than 1 and preferably less than 10. Specifically the diglycicyl ether of bis-(oxymethylene glycol and a process for their production by subjecting to epoxidation the corresponding unsaturated ethers especially by using an aliphatic or aromatic peracid or by adding the elements of hypochlorous acid across the double bond by the agency of aqueous hypochlorous acid, N-chloro urea or other N-chloro amide, tertiary butyl hypochlorite in the presence of an acid, followed by ring closure. The description also outlines the possibility of bromohydrin intermediate formation. The starting materials may be produced by methods of Specification 962,453. In the examples the epoxides of diallyl ethers of bis-(oxymethylene) glycol, of bis-(1,2,3,6-tetrahydrobenzyl) ethers of aligo-oxy methylene glycols, of bis-dihydrodicyclopentadienyl bis-and tris-oxymethylene ethers. The preparation of the last named starting material is also described. Specification 936,346 is referred to claiming and describing the compounds wherein x is 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 865,340.ALSO:Hardenable epoxide compositions comprise a novel epoxide or mixture thereof of the general formula RO.(CH2O)xR, x being a small integer greater than 1, preferably less than 10, R being epoxy alkyl, epoxy cycloalkyl, epoxy aralkyl, epoxy alkenyl or an epoxy polycyclic aliphatic grouping, and specifically the diglycidyl ether of bis-(oxymethylene) glycol, and a hardening agent, especially a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride and optionally a tertiary amine and/ or a polyhydroxy compound, and optionally further epoxy resins. The usual Ciba lists of hardeners, catalysts and other epoxide components, fillers are provided. In the examples, the epoxides of bis-(1,2,3,6-tetrahydrobenzyl) ethers of oligomethylene glycols and the diglycidyl ethers of bis-(oxymethylene) glycol are compared as diluents for a Bisphenol A epoxy resin hardened by 4,41-diaminodiphenyl methane against the corresponding simple formal and butyl glycidyl ether. A comparison of the oligo oxymethylene ether versus the simple formal of the epoxide of bis-(1,2,3,6-tetrahydrobenzyl) ether cured with hexahydrophthalic anhydride and 1% N : N-dibenzylamine is also included. The novel epoxides are closely related to those in Specification 936,346. Specification 962,453 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 865,340.
