996, 572. Thermometers. E. KIEBACK, and P. PETER. March 14, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 9802/62. Headings G1D and G1N. To compensate for the cooling effect on a building of winds at different angles, a thermometer used in controlling a heating system is placed in a casing 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, placed adjacent, but spaced from, an outside wall of the building, the casing 2<SP>1</SP> having an air inlet 15 facing towards a wind blowing perpendicularly at the wall of the building and downwardly or upwardly directed air outlets 11<SP>1</SP> having horizontal outlet edges. The thermometer may be in the form of a metal or plastic sleeve 5 with a resistance winding 6, a heating winding 7 being within the sleeve 5 to provide a manually controlled modifying influence. By arranging one outlet 11<SP>1</SP> facing the building and two more outlets 11<SP>1</SP> at 120‹ thereto, the cooling effect of the wind on the resistance thermometer varies according to the direction of the wind in an amount corresponding to the effect on the building. In a modification there is only one outlet, facing the building, and the inlet is a passage in the lower part of the casing which is heart-shaped in crosssection, Fig. 1a, so that an oblique wind is partly diverted by rib 13 back to the inlet 8. In a further form the inlet is a vertical slit in the casing and the resistance thermometer is enclosed in an open ended tube which extends through the bottom of the casing to form the outlet. About a third of the casing on the side facing the building may be painted black and the rest white or reflecting so that warmth radiated from the wall of the building will be allowed for but direct solar radiation will have little effect.
