Abstract

Vinyl chloride is copolymerized with an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated mono or polycarboxylic acid in the presence of at least one epoxidized alkenyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. Specified comonomers are C1- 10 alkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric or maleic acids, e.g. 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Preferred alkenyl esters are allyl ester of dec-9-enoic acid, dodec-9-enoic acid, palmitoleic acid, gadoleic acid, arachidonic acid, cetoleic acid, erucic acid, nervonic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, petroselenic acid, vaccenic acid and linolenic acid. Polymerization may be effected in aqueous dispersion in the presence of lauroyl peroxide and polyvinyl alcohol. In examples, vinyl chloride and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate are copolymerized in the presence of epoxidized allyl tallate.
