Abstract
996,386. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 29, 1960], No. 40904/60. Heading F2E. In a disc brake comprising a pair of limbs situated one on each side of the brake disc, a brake applying means is formed in each limb comprising a blind cylinder and a piston fluid tightly slidable therein and the axes of the cylinders are inclined relative to the braking surface of the disc, the open ends of the cylinders being so formed that the projected periphery of each cylinder along its axis is clear of the limb on the opposite side of the disc. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 each piston 24 acts upon a thrust member 27 of a friction pad 28 and since the cylinder 20 is angled to the plane of the disc the pad 28 moves axially of the cylinder and the pad is guided by the walls of the cylinder and by a brake torque member 29 bolted to the limbs 3 at two spaced locations. A layer 28a of electrically inert friction material of low coefficient friction is bonded to one side of the pad so that there will be no undue restriction on the movement of the pad towards the brake disc. Due to the angle at which the pads meet the disc a self-servo effect is obtained. The friction pad assemblies may be replaced by removing the torque members 29. Fig. 1 shows an alternative embodiment in which the friction pads 9 are mounted on pressure members 8 pivoted at 14 to the caliper housing 2 having two limbs 3 set at an angle of 60 degrees which is bisected by plane of the disc 1. The brake may be applied by piston and cylinder devices 6, 5 or by mechanical actuation of lever 11 which acts through rod 10 to move the pressure members 8 toward each other. The pressure members may be removed to assist in the replacement of the friction pads 9 by withdrawal of pivot members 14 which are screwed into the wob 4 of the caliper housing 2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 767,099.
