Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and G3] In automatic line tracing apparatus of the kind in which a sensing element 14 (Fig. 3) gives a control signal indicative of the displacement of the element 14 from the line 16 to be traced and rotates simultaneously and equally with the carriage 20 to which is secured a wheel 22, the carraige 20 and the element 14 being rotated by a steering device 18 responsive to the control signal, the plane defined by the axis of rotation 24 of the wheel 22 and the point of contact 32 of the wheel on the driving surface is displaced behind, with respect to the direction of travel of the wheel, the axis of rotation 26 of the carriage 20. The apparatus which is coupled to a flame torch (Fig. 1a not shown) is otherwise similar to that disclosed in Specification 995,421 which is referred to. In the wheel carriage (Fig. 4) the gear 54 driven by the steering device (not shown) rotates the member 46 and the driving head 52 to which is secured the wheel 22. This wheel is driven by a motor 60 through shaft 56, the gears and idlers 66, 88, 72 and 74 giving the necessary displacement of axes "d" said to be 0.040 and which enables the apparatus to accurately follow sharp bends in the line to be followed. The wheel may also be displaced to one side of the axis of rotation 26 of the carriage (Fig. 5 not shown).
