Abstract

1387113 Grinding CRANFIELD INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 29 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 46605/70 Heading B3D [Also in Division G3] The surface speed of a cam profile workpiece under a grinding wheel is kept constant by altering the angular velocity of the workpiece. The instantaneous shortest distance between the centre of the workpiece and the axis of the grinding wheel is sensed and the rate of change of this distance derived to give two signals which can be used to provide a desired angular velocity signal which is then used in a retroactive system to adjust the speed of the workpiece. In the embodiment shown the camshaft is mounted on a pivot and its position relative to the grinding wheel (controlled by a master cam and follower arrangement), is sensed by a potentiometer 9 provided in the pivot. The potentiometer output is fed to differentiating circuit 19 whose output is combined in circuit 17 with the position signal to provide a signal representative of a desired grinding speed which is used in oscillator 20 to provide a pulse train with a repetition rate proportional to the input signal. The speed of rotation of the camshaft is measured by the optical arrangement of a disc 12 having a radial grating which co-operates with transducers 13 to produce from logic 14 a pulse train whose repetition rate represents the speed of cam shaft 3. The pulse trains are compared in counter 15 and the resulting signal used to control the speed of motor 10. The desired mean speed is set using the manually adjustable controller 18. A velocity transducer may be used to determine the velocity in space of the contact point and thus replace differentiating circuit 19. In the case where the grinding wheel position alters, this movement is used to provide the distance signal.
